lobster club is pleased to announce the opening of follies, jessalyn brooks’ solo debut with lobster club. the title, follies, is a double entendre—a nod to the sensual allure of showgirls, and the notion of folly—acting on pure instinct. like the tarot’s fool card, follies symbolizes the beginning of a journey without judgment, allowing the concepts of past and future to dissipate, creating a state of presence.
this collection was created in brooks’ studio, located in los angeles’ flower district, neighboring skid row. apparent in her work is the stark contrast between lush floral beauty and the grit of skid row. it weaves together themes of eros and thanatos—the dual forces of erotic love and death that coexist in a delicate, petal-like dance of life and entropy.
when asked about her headspace during the creation of this body of work, brooks’ responded simply — “i wasn’t thinking about it. that’s the honest truth. that's why i wanted to title this show follies, because i was just present. it was something i just needed to get out.”
